Buying guide

How to choose a cat scratcher that saves your sofa

Scratching is not bad behavior. It keeps claws healthy, stretches the back and marks territory. The trick is to offer a surface the cat prefers to your furniture, in the place the cat already scratches.

Vertical or horizontal?

Watch your cat. Stretching up a door frame or the sofa arm means a vertical scratcher. Dragging claws across the rug means a floor mat. The L-Shape Scratcher covers both with two surfaces in one piece, which is the safe pick if you are not sure.

Corners and small spaces

Cats love the corner of a wall or a sofa. The Foldable Sisal Corner Mat wraps around a corner and folds flat, so it fits an apartment and protects exactly the spot that gets attacked.

Material matters

  • Sisal is rough and lasts. Most cats that ignore cardboard take to sisal.
  • Cardboard is soft and sheds, but many cats love the feel. Replace it when it gets fluffy.

How to move the habit

  1. Place the scratcher right against the furniture being scratched.
  2. Rub a little catnip or silvervine on it; our Toys collection has both.
  3. Once the cat uses it daily, move it a few inches a day to where you want it.

Common questions

Why does my cat scratch the sofa instead of the scratcher?

Usually placement. Cats scratch where they stretch after naps and near entrances. Put the scratcher against the sofa arm they use, then move it gradually once they switch.

Sisal or cardboard?

Sisal lasts longer and most cats prefer its rough grip. Cardboard is softer and cheaper to replace. If your cat has never used a scratcher, sisal is the safer first choice.

Does the corner mat need screws?

No. It folds around the corner and stays put on its own, which makes it fine for rented homes.

How long does a sisal scratcher last?

With daily use, months to years. Loose threads can be trimmed; the surface keeps working even when it looks worn.
